Eligibility and access

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is for NDIS Participants who need help with daily tasks to live more independently. Your eligibility depends on your support needs and goals for independent living.
You may be eligible for SIL if you
Every Participant’s needs are unique. SIL eligibility is assessed individually to ensure you receive the right level of support to achieve your goals.

How SIL Funding Works Under the NDIS

Supported Independent Living is funded through the Capital Supports budget in your NDIS plan — specifically under Supported Independent Living (SIL) as a line item. This is separate from your Core Supports budget, which covers everyday personal care, meals, and household tasks delivered at home.

The NDIA assesses SIL funding based on your support needs and the goals you set during your planning meeting. The level of funding reflects how much assistance you require — whether that is a few hours of support each day or more intensive around-the-clock care. The SIL line item covers the support hours provided by your support workers; it does not cover rent, utilities, or food, which are paid separately.

Getting SIL in your plan typically requires a Supported Independent Living assessment and a support needs assessment from an occupational therapist or other allied health professional. Your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or support coordinator can help you request this assessment and prepare evidence for your planning meeting. Lead Your Life can also guide you through the process — contact us to discuss your situation.

Once SIL funding is approved, you can choose a registered SIL provider to deliver your supports. Lead Your Life is a registered NDIS provider, and we work with NDIA-managed, plan-managed, and self-managed participants.

FAQ’s

Got any questions?

How do I get SIL funding in my NDIS plan?

To get SIL in your plan, you need to demonstrate that you require daily support to live independently and that SIL is the most appropriate option for your situation. This usually involves a support needs assessment from an allied health professional and a discussion with your NDIA planner or LAC at your planning meeting. Your support coordinator can help you prepare the right evidence.

SIL (Supported Independent Living) funds the support workers who assist you in your home — the people, not the property. SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) funds the physical property itself, for participants with extreme functional impairment who need specialist-built housing. You can have SIL without SDA (living in a standard rental with support workers) or have both SIL and SDA together (living in specialist-built housing with full-time support).

Yes. The NDIS is built around choice and control, and this extends to your support workers. At Lead Your Life, we work with you to identify support workers whose skills, experience, and personality suit your needs and preferences. If a match is not working well, we can make changes to ensure you feel comfortable and well supported.

Our SIL properties are shared homes with a small number of residents, designed to foster a genuine sense of community while preserving privacy. The exact configuration depends on the property — contact us for current details about each home.

Daily routines in a Lead Your Life SIL home are shaped by each resident’s individual plan and personal goals. Support is available for morning and evening personal care, meal preparation, household tasks, medication reminders, and community outings. We also facilitate group activities within the home and help residents access the local community at times that suit them.

Yes. Short-term respite (STA) at a supported accommodation facility can serve as a trial stay before committing to SIL. This gives you the opportunity to experience supported living and assess whether it suits your lifestyle and goals. Lead Your Life also offers short-term respite care — speak with our team about arranging a trial stay.

Yes. Lead Your Life is registered under Module 2a of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, which means we are approved to support participants with behaviours of concern. Participants with a behaviour support plan are welcome in our SIL homes. We work closely with behaviour support practitioners to ensure each resident’s plan is implemented safely and consistently.

Contact our team to start the conversation. We will discuss your support needs, current NDIS plan, and which of our SIL homes may be a good fit. If you are still working towards getting SIL in your plan, we can explain the process and help connect you with the right supports to make that happen.
